Word of the day (and a good one to know):

Prig:

a person who displays or demands of others pointlessly precise conformity, fussiness about trivialities, or exaggerated propriety, especially in a self-righteous or irritating manner.

I was studying up on all the NT scriptures relating to the Sabbath this morning then I saw your post… I love when God does this!

I didn’t understand the Sabbath for most of my life with God. I lean toward hyper productivity, so resting was never my strong suit. It takes intention and practice to let go of the control. But He told me to, and He will honor our obedience. I am now a believer, but I still struggle through it sometimes. In that struggle I talk to Him! 🙌

I remember the moment when working on the Sabbath became an issue with my family. A cousin needed to earn money for college and took a job as a cashier at the supermarket. It required working on Sunday. When she complained about it she was told, You can still have your Sunday but on a different day of the week. We all know that a day off is not the same as Sunday.

Yes. While technically true, it’s not the same as a day set aside in society as a whole, particularly for rest in God. It’s just not. We were better off as a people and a society when Sunday was deemed sacred.

I agree.

This is a thoughtful and balanced reflection on the Sabbath and it aligns well with the heart of Scripture.Jesus Himself makes it clear that God’s commands flow from love not oppression when He says The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath Mark 2:27.The Sabbath reveals God’s design for human flourishing because He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust Psalm 103:14.Rest is not a burden but a gift rooted in God’s care for His people. The problem Jesus confronted was not obedience but legalism that forgot mercy. He reminded the religious leaders that it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath Mark 3:4 showing that compassion always reflects God’s heart more clearly than rigid rule keeping. At the same time Scripture warns us against self reliance and endless striving for God says In returning and rest shall ye be saved in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength Isaiah 30:15.The balance is wisdom.Rest without God becomes laziness but rules without love become bondage. As Jesus invites us Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest Matthew 11:28.True Sabbath rest is ultimately found in Christ who gives rest for our souls Hebrews 4:9–10.This post wisely reminds us that God’s commands are meant to heal guide and bless not to inflate pride or crush people under man made rules.
